Rumored Features

  • New display sizes
  • New ultra-thin model
  • No iPhone 17 Plus
  • Aluminum for iPhone 17 Pro models
  • Faster A-series chip
  • Pro Motion for all models
  • Upgraded selfie camera

We’re yet still very early in the iPhone 16 release cycle, but rumors for the iPhone 17 models expected for 2025 are already going around.

2025 could bring one of the biggest design updates to iPhones since 2017’s iPhone X when Apple is said to be working on an all-new iPhone 17 “slim” featuring a much thinner design, new size, different look for the camera, and more.

We expect four total models in 2025: the iPhone 17, the iPhone 17 Pro, the iPhone 17 Pro Max, and the new iPhone 17 “Slim” or “Air.” There will not be an iPhone 17 Plus. Apple is scrapping the “Plus” lineup. It’s not a replacement for iPhone 17 Plus, but the slimmed down iPhone 17 will debut as a brand new device in the lineup.

Rumors surrounding the exact things we can expect from the new iPhone are mixed at this point in time, but we do know to expect a thinner iPhone 17 with a display size close to 6.6 inches. It has been said that it is almost as big as a MacBook Air. The iPhone 17 Pro would then serve as the MacBook Pro.

Due to the size differences, since the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max should come in at 6.3 inches and 6.9 inches, then the iPhone 17 slim would find itself right at the middle of those sizes. The total size for the standard model iPhone 17 might also be more.

While some rumors have been stating that the slimmer iPhone 17 will be a high-end device, even more expensive than the iPhone 17 Pro Max, others have positioned it as a device in between the iPhone 17 and the iPhone 17 Pro models. One rumor insists it will have a narrower Dynamic Island and a camera centered while another claims that there will be a single-lens rear camera, as well as a standard Dynamic Island. Rumors should begin to clear up as 2025 approaches.

All four iPhones that Apple is releasing in 2025 will reportedly feature ProMotion display technology with a 120Hz maximum refresh rate for smoother scrolling and video content, and at this point, we’ve heard enough rumors about it to believe that’s probably the change we’ll see. Rumors also suggest that Apple is planning an anti-reflective display that is more scratch resistant than the current Ceramic Shield.

As for camera updates, Apple is said to be working on an updated 24-megapixel front-facing camera with a six-element lens, and the iPhone 17 Pro Max could include an upgraded 48-megapixel Telephoto camera, which would be an improvement over the current 12-megapixel sensor.

At least one iPhone 17 model next year will get an Apple-designed Wi-Fi 7 chip rather than a chip manufactured by Broadcom.

Iphone 17 rumors

iPhone 17 ‘Air’

Multiple rumors have suggested that Apple is working on an all-new version of the iPhone for 2025, with the device expected to have a “significantly thinner” design than current iPhone models. Early rumors suggested this would be a replacement for the “Plus” iPhone, but some rumors have suggested it will actually be a new high-end device that is more expensive than the current Pro Max iPhone, which starts at $1,199.

Rumors differ as to exactly how the “iPhone 17 Air” will fit into the iPhone lineup. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, for example, doesn’t believe that the iPhone 17 Air will be more expensive or high-end than the Pro models, and a higher price tag wouldn’t actually make sense considering some of the information we’ve heard about the device.

We don’t quite know what to expect from the new iPhone because of the many rumors surrounding it. What we do know, however, is that there will be a new iPhone in 2025 and it will be thinner than current models.

iPhone 17 Slim Feature

There have been rumors for the new iPhone that called it the “iPhone 17 Slim” or “iPhone 17 Air.” However, we don’t know what exactly Apple will call it in 2025. The names are in reference to how this device comes out more streamlined and skinnier in comparison with previous devices, and people refer to the device as the “iPhone Air.”

For the M4 version of the 12.9-inch iPad Pro, which Apple has announced would be shaving over a millimeter off that thickness to create the thinnest product that the Apple company made. That same focus on a svelte design is expected in 2025, and the upcoming iPhone is said to be much thinner than current iPhones.

We don’t know details on how thin Apple is going to make the new iPhone, but a rumor originating in Korea has suggested that Apple has encountered problems making the device sufficiently thin due to the battery, so it’s now not as thin as Apple had envisioned.

The battery in the iPhone 17 Air is apparently going to be 6mm thick, so the iPhone will have to be thicker than that. The thinnest iPhone that Apple has made to date is the iPhone 6 at 6.9mm, and the iPhone 17 Air is expected to be thinner. Analyst Jeff Pu has suggested that the upcoming iPhone will be around 6mm thick, but The Information has said it will be between 5mm and 6mm thick.

By contrast, the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max are 8.25mm thick, so if Apple maintains that thickness on the iPhone 17 Pro models, the iPhone 17 Air will be 2.25mm thinner.

For size, it will fall between iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max. Individual rumors suggest that the final measurement set by Apple would be either at 6.55 inches, 6.6 inches, or 6.65 inches in display size. Therefore, it would be smaller than iPhone 17 Pro Max, and larger than the 17 Pro.

The Information claims that the rear camera will be moved from the top left position on the iPhone into the middle of the device. Described as a “large, centered camera bump” at the back of the device, the camera setup will be present.

The site has also reported that the iPhone 17 Air will have a smaller hole and pill-shaped cutout for the front camera, meaning the Dynamic Island will be narrower. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo disagrees with this report, saying the Dynamic Island will be the same size as the current Dynamic Island, but he does agree that the device will have a single-lens rear camera.

Generic iPhone 17 Feature With Full Width Dynamic Island single camera

Analyst Jeff Pu also believes that the device will feature a single-lens rear camera with a 48-megapixel resolution, but he has not mentioned a new location for the camera lens.

Because there is no room for a speaker on the bottom edge of the device, it is expected to have just one speaker at the top. Apple’s current iPhones have two speakers, one at the top and one at the bottom.

Kuo believes that the trimmed-down iPhone 17 will be composed of a titanium-aluminum frame, as Apple is said to use titanium but with a mix containing more aluminum than what Pro iPhones use today. Its selling point is supposedly supposed to be design over specs.

iPhone 17

Apple will offer a regular iPhone 17, an iPhone 17 Pro, an iPhone 17 Pro Max, and the iPhone 17 Slim, but no iPhone 17 Plus this year. The “Plus” phone is being axed from the 2025 lineup for lackluster sales.

Apple might bring a new display size in the standard iPhone 17 model in 2025. The iPhone 17 will measure in at 6.3 inches, whereas currently it is 6.1 inches, and the same size as the iPhone 16 Pro.

There have been rumors circulating that Apple will be dropping the Plus model in 2025, meaning that only one more affordable version may be left, and at 6.3 inches, it would fit between the current 6.1-inch iPhone 15 and the 6.7-inch iPhone 15 Plus. This would place the screen sizes at 6.3 inches, 6.6 inches (slim model), 6.3 inches (Pro) and 6.9 inches (Pro Max).

iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max

The Information says that the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max will have “significant design changes.” Apple is said to be ditching the titanium frame, returning to aluminum. Apple has not used aluminum for a higher-end iPhone since the stainless steel iPhone X was released in 2017.

iPhone 17 Pro Dual Tone Rectangle Feature 1

In addition to aluminum framing, iPhone 17 Pro models are said to feature a half-aluminum half-glass back instead of a completely glass rear panel. The top half will still be a sheet of aluminum, but there will be glass still on the bottom half, allowing for wireless charging capability. Having a partially aluminum back could make the iPhone 17 Pro models more drop-resistant.

Apple is preparing for a larger “rectangular” camera bump made of aluminum instead of glass. Cameras bumps are currently square in shape, so a rectangular camera bump would be a great design departure.

The iPhone 17 Pro Max could have a smaller Dynamic Island because it would use a “metalens” for Face ID, which would use less space and enable a narrower profile.

Display

There are a few upgrades coming to the iPhone 17’s display, including a new coating from Apple and plans to bring Pro features to standard models.

ProMotion and Always-On

For years, the 120Hz “ProMotion” refresh rate has been limited to the Pro versions of the iPhone, but in 2025, it could extend to the entire iPhone lineup. Rumors suggest that the Pro and standard models will support ProMotion, and that will in turn allow for always-on functionality.

Given all four new iPhones will receive ProMotion displays in 2025, those modes will no longer be an exclusive feature of the Pro models of iPhone.

All models of the iPhone 17 will come with LTPO panels. This is what allows for ProMotion thanks to better power efficiency.

Always-on technology will be allowing always-on time, widgets, and notifications that have been available on the Pro models for a while now.

ProMotion enables refresh rates ranging from 1Hz to 120Hz. At the high end, the 120Hz refresh rate provides smoother scrolling and video content.

Tougher Coating

The iPhone 17 lineup will allegedly get an anti-reflective display compared to the Ceramic Shield used on the current iPhone models that has hinted to be more scratch resistant.

Apple has been planning for a “super-hard anti-reflective layer” able to better stand up to wear and tear.

A-Series Chip

It seems that the iPhone 17 series may not get TSMC’s next-generation 2 nanometer chips, but I expect A19 chip technology with an upgraded 3nm process. Apple usually brings faster and more efficient iPhone chip technology every year.

The iPhone 17 Pro and the iPhone 17 Pro Max are expected to come with an A19 Pro chip while the iPhone 17 and the iPhone 17 slim might have the standard A19.

TSMC is working on its N3P process, so mass production will be starting at the end of 2024. That’s the kind of chip technology that we’re expecting Apple to use for their iPhone 17 lineup. Compared to earlier versions of 3nm chips, the N3P chips offer increased performance efficiency and increased transistor density.

RAM

The higher-end iPhone 17 models could include 12GB RAM, while the standard iPhone 17 model is expected to have 8GB. 12GB RAM would be a 4GB increase over the iPhone 15 Pro models, while 8GB RAM would be a 2GB increase over the standard iPhone 15 models.

According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the 12GB RAM upgrade will be limited to iPhone 17 Pro Max, the rest of them will feature 8GB RAM. Analyst Jeff Pu suggests that the iPhone 17 slim would come with 8GB RAM and the iPhone 17 Pro models with 12GB RAM.

Apple Designed 5G Modem Chip

The iPhone 17 slim is one of the first iPhones that will reportedly receive an Apple-designed 5G modem. For other iPhone 17 models, Qualcomm modems will be used by Apple.

SIM Tray

Apple will eliminate the physical SIM slot on iPhones in more countries next year, though it’s not yet clear which countries. Apple eliminated the SIM card tray on the iPhone 14 models that went on sale in the United States, but a physical SIM has so far been present on iPhones sold outside of the United States.

It could be that only the iPhone 17 Air will not have the SIM tray because of a slim design for the upcoming device.

Wi-Fi 7

Apple included Wi-Fi 7 in the models of iPhone 16. For iPhone 17, Apple could finally employ its custom-designed Wi-Fi 7 chip.

At least one model from iPhone 17 will come with the in-house Apple-designed Wi-Fi 7 chip, according to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. Analyst Jeff Pu believes that iPhone 17 Pro models will use an Apple-designed Wi-Fi 7 chip.

Battery

Apple has possibly learned something from recent criticism over making the removal of the 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max iPhone batteries harder in this line. Possibly, Apple’s going to install the same removal feature technology from the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus. Apple’s iPhone 16 and 16 Plus use a variety of adhesive, which can loosen upon a low-voltage electric current but the 16 Pro and Pro Max use common adhesives.

This would come to all iPhone 17 models the following year, simplifying battery replacement.

Cameras

All of the models from iPhone 17 are expected to receive a 24-megapixel front camera with a six-element lens. This means it will be an improvement compared to the 12-megapixel front camera that is currently offered on selfies. The more the megapixels, the higher the detail and clarity upon cropping in.

The iPhone 17 Pro Max is expected to carry a 48-megapixel Wide camera, a 48-megapixel Ultra Wide camera, and a 48-megapixel Tetraprism Telephoto camera. This will be the first iPhone to boast three 48-megapixel cameras. The iPhone 17 slim is expected to have a single-lens 48-megapixel rear camera.

The mechanical aperture at least one iPhone 17 model, to be released next year, will let users vary the size of the aperture for the iPhone 17 so that it changes the amount of light that reaches the lens. iPhone models at this point are all fixed apertures; having a variable aperture will enable the capture of images with a shallow depth-of-field.

The iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max will remain a 5x Telephoto optical zoom lens, and it will be exclusive to Pro. Standard iPhone 17 and the iPhone 17 Air won’t have the 5x zoom.
